Where it all started

Growing up in Texas, I don't remember learning much about how to use money to create opportunities. What I do remember is seeing everyone around me showing off what money could buy. I was fortunate not to grow up in poverty and I had a pretty typical childhood—working hard in school and earning some spending money from part-time jobs. I enjoyed my teenage years, but I graduated high school without ever saving or investing a dime for the long term. No one taught me how important this step was for the future. 

While my relatives weren’t struggling financially, they also didn’t climb very far up the corporate ladder, nor did they seem to place much importance on planning. I can only assume that, like me, they were following what they'd been taught—or not taught—about money. Fast forward a few years, and I found myself serving in the military, pursuing a career of helping others through medicine while enjoying traveling the world.

In the military, I met people with stories similar to mine, but I also encountered others who had joined for the sole purpose of supporting their families outside the U.S.  While many of my fellow service members were focused on climbing the career ladder, these individuals stood out because they were doing more—they were discovering and creating opportunities to get ahead financially.  I was just happy to have a guaranteed paycheck every month, but these overachievers were busy building secondary income sources; they were using money in ways that I didn’t fully understand. At first, I was too stuck in my ways to learn from others who had different cultural backgrounds. Yet, I was impressed by their hustle, and it made me curious about what more I could do with my own finances. So, I decided to volunteer as a financial advocate within my organization. This allowed me to learn more about money management while helping others in the process. I also made some good financial choices early on, avoiding common mistakes that could’ve set me back.

That experience and what I learned after I exited military service spurred me to become a better money coach and create The Opportunity King Blog. I have developed a treasure chest of resources and tools designed to help others overcome challenges with money while developing a greater understanding of the connection between wealth, health, business, and technology. There is truly a foundation for mastering your money that will set you free and create new opportunities. I am glad you asked!  In order to make sense of this, it will require you to ignore much of what you probably were taught about money and focus on the habit of investing in yourself.

At the same time, it's very challenging to have a conversation about money if   you feel that you have no options and no money to do anything with right? The average person in our economy would agree that having enough money is a struggle.  But, if we take a step back for a moment and question why we are here and why we feel like we can't save or invest anything, it starts to reveal a pattern.
